Main Ingredients
- 1 small white onion (thinly sliced)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/3 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 lb very thinly sliced deli roast beef (cut into strips or steak, again cut into very thin strips)
- 4 sandwich buns
Instructions
- Melt Butter and Sauté Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until tender and beginning to turn golden, about 5 minutes.
- Prepare the Sauce: Stir in the barbecue sauce, chili sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Whisk together until fully incorporated into a smooth sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 3-5 minutes.
- Add and Coat Beef: Add the thinly sliced roast beef strips to the skillet. Gently toss the beef in the sauce to coat evenly and heat through, about 2-3 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from heat and pile the sauced beef and caramelized onion mixture onto sandwich buns. Serve immediately while hot.
Notes
- Use very thinly sliced deli roast beef or pre-sliced steak for best results and quick cooking.
- You can substitute sandwich buns with rolls or even toasted bread slices for variation.
- Adjust sweetness by modifying the amount of brown sugar to taste.
- For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture.
- To keep sandwiches warm before serving, cover lightly with foil.
