Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 17.3 ounce box puff pastry sheets (thawed)
Apple Filling
- 3 cups Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored and diced)
- 6 tablespoons brown sugar
- 4 teaspoons cinnamon (divided use)
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Topping and Frying
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- Oil for frying
- Caramel sauce for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Pastry: Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 4 pieces and place them on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
- Cook Apple Filling: In a pan over medium heat, combine the apples, brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Bring to a simmer and cook for 8 minutes or until apples are tender. Stir in the butter until melted.
- Thicken Filling: Whisk the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and add to the apple mixture. Continue cooking for 3 minutes, stirring frequently until the filling thickens.
- Assemble Pies: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the apple filling onto one side of each pastry piece. Brush the edges with water, then fold over to form a rectangle. Crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Chill Pies: Place the assembled pies in the freezer for 20 minutes to firm up before frying.
- Heat Oil: Heat 3 inches of oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Fry Pies: Fry 2 to 3 pies at a time for 6 minutes or until golden brown and fully cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Add Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, mix the granulated sugar with the remaining 3 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon. Immediately sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the hot pies.
- Serve: Let the pies cool slightly and serve warm with optional caramel sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for the best tart flavor and texture that holds up well when cooked.
- Chilling the pies before frying helps maintain their shape and prevents the filling from leaking out.
- The puff pastry creates a flaky, crisp crust that mimics the classic fast-food version.
- You can substitute the cinnamon sugar topping with powdered sugar if preferred.
- Frying oil can be vegetable oil or canola oil; ensure the oil stays at a consistent 350 degrees Fahrenheit for even cooking.
- For a lower-fat alternative, consider baking the pies at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes until golden and crispy.
