Description

These easy apple cheddar oat cookies combine sweet apples and tangy sharp cheddar for a unique treat that works perfectly for breakfast or snack time. With wholesome ingredients like oats, applesauce, and raisins, these soft, flavorful cookies are loved by the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (105 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground or grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup smooth applesauce
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium apple, such as Granny Smith or Gala, cut into small dice (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1 1/2 cups (155 grams) oats
  • 1 1/4 cups shredded (105 grams) sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup (85 grams) raisins, optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet. Line a sheet pan with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, and kosher salt until well combined.
  3. Combine wet ingredients. In a separate large bowl, whisk the applesauce, honey, vanilla extract, and egg until smooth and fully incorporated.
  4. Incorporate dry into wet. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, whisking until no dry spots remain and the batter is smooth.
  5. Add main mix-ins. Use a spoon or spatula to fold in the diced apples, oats, shredded cheddar cheese, and optional raisins evenly throughout the batter. The mixture will be sticky and slightly loose.
  6. Shape cookies. Scoop 1/4 cup portions (about 60 grams each) and form each into rounds approximately 3/4 inch thick using your hands, similar to burger patties. Arrange them on the prepared sheet pan with cookies close together as they will not spread.
  7. Bake. Place the sheet pan in a preheated oven and bake for 18 minutes. Look for browned edges and a sizzling sound; check the bottoms for visible browning to ensure they are done.
  8. Cool and store. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack and let them cool completely. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for up to one month.

Notes

  • This recipe combines the sweetness of apples with sharp cheddar cheese for a unique flavor that's great for breakfast or snacks.
  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Gala for the best texture and flavor.
  • Cookies will be soft right out of the oven but will firm up as they cool.
  • Cookies do not spread during baking, so you can place them close together on the baking sheet.
  • Optional raisins add extra sweetness and chewiness but can be omitted if preferred.
  • Store baked cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
